hina takes big step in artemisinin resistance

Nobel Prize winner Tu Youyou’s team on Monday announced major scientific breakthroughs in treatment of artemisinin resistance.

Sweet wormwood was used in ancient Chinese therapy to treat various illnesses, including fevers typical of mala

ria. Nearly five decades ago, Chinese scientists, including Tu, identified its active ingredient, artemisinin.

In 2005, the WHO recommended Artemisinin-based Combin

ation Therapies as the most effective malaria treatment available.

However, the World Malaria Report 2018 published by the World Health Organiza

tion said that after an unprecedented period of success in global malaria control, progress has stalled. Art

emisinin resistance and partner drug resistance has been reported in Greater Mekong subregion.

The spike in trade tensions has already rattled financial

markets. The yuan has weakened by 2 percent to its lowest level since January.

“We expect stock markets and the yuan to remain under pressure in the near term, though they c

ould be supported by an expected stabilization in the domestic economy later this year,” Wu said.

Sheng Songcheng, the former director of the Survey and Statistics Department in the Peo

ple’s Bank of China, said the truth is that imposing more tariffs on Chinese goods has not yet reduced US trade deficits.

The long-lasting US trade deficits in goods was formed from the US

dollar’s international status, its domestic low deposit rate and the US position in the glo

bal value chain, and those factors cannot be changed by protectionist measures, Sheng said.

hina Eastern asks Boeing for 737 MAX compensation

hina Eastern Airlines confirmed to news outlet The Paper on Tuesday it has

officially lodged claims with Boeing for losses cause

d by the 737 MAX’s grounding and late delivery, adding the two companies will stay in communication over the issue.

The move makes China Eastern Airlines the first airline in China to ask Boeing for compensation, as the 737 M

AX suffered worldwide suspensions after two deadly crashes which took more than 300 lives in six months.

Fourteen Boeing 737 MAX jets under China Eastern Airlines have been grounded since March 11.

Boeing stressed that it refused to talk about any communications with its clients.

Bloomberg cited people with knowledge of the matter last Wednesday, saying

Meditation is the easiest way for people to reduce pr

adjustment for people, which is

good for health as it can reduce the risk

of anxiety and depression by 25 percent, according to Workers’ Daily.

If people can’t manage their emotions effectively under high pressure, it will

harm their family life, work and social life, experts say.

The suggestion sparked reaction from netizens, with Sina Weibo user

the WTO is for the benefit of the public, not a tool for par

embers. If its members cannot reform the architecture and resolve the key issues, they may all end up in various regional groups.

“Many bilateral tensions or challenges countries are facing today requir

e a multilateral response, and WTO reform is definitely needed, especially in the area

s of trade and investment,” said Xue Rongjiu, deputy director of the Beijing-based China Society for WTO Studies.

Chen Fengying, a senior economics researcher at the China Institutes of Contemporary Internationa

l Relations, said the US government seems to have made driving WTO reform its priority so that the country can claim the high gr

ound in global trade and lead the process for making new rules and establishing a new global trading system.

This move poses a challenge to the WTO and its basic principles including that of most favored nation status and national treatment, she said.

The future growth prospects of today’s early-stage (that is

lower-income-some growing and others not) developing countries will be of huge importance in red

ucing poverty further. Although these countries face significant headwinds, they could also seize imp

ortant new growth opportunities-especially with the help of digital platforms.

The headwinds are certainly considerable. For starters, advances in digital technolo

gies-robotics, machine learning, sensors, and vision-directly threaten the labor-intensive manu

facturing and assembly upon which lower-income, nonresource-rich economies have traditionally relied.

Moreover, climate change has had its greatest economic impact on the tropical and subtropical regio

ns where most of the lower-income countries are located. The effects of global warming are highly disrup

tive in fragile economies, and, taken together, constitute a major new obstacle to growthle

Currently, 13 countries have been involved in the project, includ

The site will “offer research teams with observa
